Vaccinations and Immunizations

MMR, Hib, OPV—nope, these aren’t ‘90s hip hop lyrics. They’re acronyms for some of the routine immunizations that public health experts recommend we stay on top of. So seriously do authorities take these shots, they’ve required them to be fully covered (free to you!) by insurance when administered by an in-network provider, regardless of whether you’ve met your deductible. Here’s what you need to know…

No matter what your specific plan, you won’t have to pay for these vaccines when you get them through an in-network doctor or healthcare professional:

  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis) Vaccine
  • Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) Vaccine
  • Td (tetanus and diphtheria) Vaccine
  • Inactivated Polio (IPV or Polio) Vaccine
  • MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) Vaccine
  • Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib) Vaccine
  • Hepatitis A Virus Vaccine
  • Hepatitis B Virus Vaccine
  • HPV  (human papillomavirus) Vaccine
  • Meningococcal (meningitis) Vaccine
  • Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine
  • Pneumococcal Vaccine
  • Rotavirus (RV) Vaccine
  • Seasonal Influenza (Seasonal Flu) Vaccine
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox) Vaccine
  • Zoster (Shingles) Vaccine

Before you make an appointment, it can be helpful to see where you’re at in the immunization schedule. You can do this easily by downloading the CDC’s mobile app (click here for Apple users, and here for Android users). It lists the schedule of all recommended shots for all age groups.

Lastly, for more granular information about these, check out the following links:

  • For infants and children to age 6, click here.
  • For children starting at age 7 through age 18, click here.
  • For adults 19 and older, click here.
  • All these vaccines are considered safe and effective in preventing a variety of serious viral and bacterial infections, however the CDC does list a few situations in which certain ones are not recommended.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, so there’s no time like the present to make sure your shots are up to date. If you’re an Oscar member and have questions about vaccines and immunization schedules, feel free to reach out to us at 1-844-MD-OSCAR or help@hioscar.com. We can walk you through coverage details, and refer you to in-network physicians who can administer the shots.
