According to Wikipedia, “While there is evidence of both Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of the two items being referred to as especially unlucky in conjunction before the 19th century.

Thanks a lot, 1800s. While we at Oscar don’t necessarily believe in superstitions, we are a health insurance company. So, as we like to say, better safe than sorry.

That said, in honor of this special day, we’d like to share a few of our favorite and weirder superstitions.

If you catch a falling leaf on the first day of autumn you will not catch the flu all winter. But if you don’t want to look crazy grasping at leaves, just get a flu shot. It’s free, just like most preventive care on Oscar plans.

An onion cut in half and placed under the bed of a sick person will cure a fever. Or maybe it will just make your eyes water. You could always just use Oscar’s free Doctor on Call feature to get advice and prescriptions right over the phone. You don’t even have to get out of bed.

And our favorite, the oldie, but goody: step on a crack, break your mother’s back. While we sincerely hope this one doesn’t come true, if your mom ever breaks anything, our networks are filled with great providers who can get her back on her feet in no time. And if she needs to see a specialist, no problem. She doesn’t need a referral.

As always, stay safe and stay healthy. And happy Friday the 13th from your friends at Oscar.
