Our Hands-On Approach

In the summer of 2014, JP McDavid was busy running a sports camp on Fire Island. A wellness coach for decades, he led an active lifestyle and took pride in the fact that he had never once gotten sick. Then one day, he developed a small open wound on his hand after a minor burn. Expecting it to heal on its own, JP kept it clean and waited for it to get better. But instead, as the days went by, the sore got progressively worse. By the time he went to the doctor and learned his hand was infected, the problem was so serious he had to go directly to the hospital.

Rapidly, the process seemed to become more overwhelming, and the bills and care more confusing. He reached out to Oscar looking for some help–and was connected to one of our in-house nurses, Tina Lesevic. JP wound up needing several surgeries, and needing to take a lot of drugs. And every step of the way, Nurse Tina was there. She met with him over breakfast to discuss his current healthcare needs, and from this was able assess how to help navigate his care, including a visit to a specialized out-of-state hospital that could handle his condition’s unique needs.

Ultimately, JP got better—so much so, in fact, that he went back to Fire Island to teach this past summer. But long before he did that, he made one very important visit: to the Oscar offices, where he met the Medical Management team (he even brought us cookies!). Of the experience, he says: “We had a real feeling of connection, and I knew she was invested in the process with me. I’ve never had such a pleasant experience with an insurance company in 62 years.”
